The Company

On May 6, we had Bonnie ("Xiang Wen," a.k.a. "Wu Xie Zhi" and "Dot"), Marc ("Anabel Windsor," a.k.a. "Abigail Wilson" and "Vicky"), and Torsten ("Qoqa Ramazanova," a.k.a. "Zoya Petrovna Sidorova").

Time: Thursday, April 24, 2014 (early evening).
Place: Islands southeast of Athens.
Last Event: The raid continues!

After securing a beachhead, demolishing the nearby helipad, pummeling the island with mortar fire, winning two close-range shootouts with the natives, and taking out a pair of 81mm mortars with anti-materiel rifle fire, the Agents find themselves on the verge of being overrun by a couple of armored HMMWVs. Fortunately, team's hiding places are good and their custom camouflage proves to be worth what the Company paid for it: The vehicles circle the area several times and then roll down the slope toward the sea. Klas creeps forward to keep an eye on them, and sees them prowl along the beach near the group's abandoned mortars, and then pick up speed and sweep around the base of the hill, toward the docks. It appears that the enemy plan is to stay in their hardened transports and survey the damage rather than expose themselves to further sniper fire (or worse).

While this is going on, Wen works on her 12.7×99mm rifle, clearing the stoppage and then reloading it with armor-piercing high-explosive rounds. When Klas radios that the HMMWVs are about to come into sight, Wen is ready to take potshots at them. As the vehicles speed back toward the mansion-turned-fortress on the opposite hilltop, Wen pops off several rounds. She doesn't succeed at immobilizing her targets, but a lot of wild swerving suggests that she did some damage. Wen stops shooting once her prey is too far away and moving too erratically to be worth her precious ammo.

When Wen is done shooting, the Agents form up, taking great care to do so on the back slope of their hill. After a brief conference, they decide that everybody but Wen should move forward on foot, using the uneven terrain and residual smoke from the mortar bombardment to conceal their approach. Wen's job is to cover her allies from the high ground until they reach and secure the burning barracks halfway up the opposite hill, and then to join them once they've succeeded. Without further ado, everybody leaps into action.

With Wen observing the surroundings and radioing warnings, it's relatively easy for her associates to move in behind rocks, scrub, and drifting smoke. They get to within 10 metres of the barracks when a blast of machine-gun fire lets them know that somebody knows they're out there. Wen searches for the gunner but can see only a wall of sandbags half hidden in the haze. Though she could doubtless neutralize the enemy position with enough AMR fire, that would chew up her ammunition supply. Fortunately, Klas and Lev are up to the challenge.

Lev signals for Anabel, Jili, Qoqa, and Paul to keep their heads down but be ready to charge. Then he and Klas each lob a fragmentation grenade at the coordinates identified by Wen. This draws another burst of gunfire . . . which ends abruptly with the telltale sound of a misfire. It seems that the dusty environment is playing havoc with weapons on both sides! An instant later, the grenades explode – and as soon as they do, the Agents rush in to mop up.

Paul leads the charge, with Jili just behind him, Anabel and Qoqa after her, and Klas and Lev bringing up the rear. The Agents cover the intervening ground without drawing any fire. Upon reaching the enemy position, it's apparent why: Most of the opposition was wounded or incapacitated by the grenades. A couple of the survivors manage to squeeze off poorly aimed bursts at the Agents, but to no effect. By the time Klas and Lev show up, Paul and Anabel have secured the area.

With sandbags and the remains of the bombarded structure providing light cover, and dense smoke from the burning ruins affording heavy concealment, the Agents decide to hold and wait for Wen to join them. With six pairs of eyes watching the area on all sides, Wen has a fairly easy time of it, jogging much of the way without incident. On arriving, she crawls up the hill past her teammates and takes a look through her scope. She can tell that there's some activity on the mansion roof, but she cannot spot a clear target. She also confirms what Klas noted earlier; namely, that the place is fortified, with armor covering the windows and firing ports in the armor.

The Agents once again discuss strategy. They conclude that their best bet would be to creep up the slope from their current position and into concealment behind the burning secondary helipad, and then to sneak out of the smoke toward the side of the mansion rather than the front. Done right, this may let them approach to within point-blank range from an unexpected quarter. However, there's still the matter of how to get inside. Wen looks at the abandoned crate of 81mm mortar bombs and has an idea. She asks everybody to hump a couple of shells . . .

Those plans made, the group moves out, burdened with a dozen heavy mortar rounds. The trip is harrowing, as the men in the mansion clearly have plenty of ammo and aren't afraid to use it. Though all the enemy fire is blind, it's also dense. There are plenty of near misses – and worse, in a last-minute stroke of bad luck, Lev catches a bullet in the leg. His teammates manage to drag him to the concealment of the smoldering helipad. The fact that the opposition doesn't concentrate gunfire on the team's position suggests that the hit was blind chance.

As the Agents pause to catch their breath, Qoqa takes a look at Lev's wound. Luckily for Lev, it was just a small-caliber graze, quite possibly by a bullet fragment or a small stone kicked up by enemy fire. Qoqa is able to patch this up well enough to get Lev back on his feet. Once Lev confirms that he's good to go, it's time to resume the attack.

Taking advantage of the smoke blowing away from the helipad and toward the mansion, the Agents make their way toward the mansion. It's a bold feat of stealth, but the absence of gunfire chewing up the scenery suggests that the gambit has paid off. As soon as the group is flattened up against the raised foundation, Wen starts fiddling with the mortar rounds. It doesn't take her long to rig them into a makeshift demolition charge, which she fits with a remote detonator and stealthily tamps up against the nearest armored window. Then she signals to the others and the team crawls to safety around the corner.

As soon as the last Agent is behind cover, Wen hits the remote detonator. There's a loud explosion, and before the echo dies down, Lev and Klas are leading the charge. When the two reach the blasted hole in the side of the building, they find a single, dazed-looking gunman standing there. No mercy is shown. By the time the others have joined them, Klas and Lev have moved into the building and secured the room.

To be continued . . .
