The Company
On July 8, we had Bonnie ("Xiang Wen," a.k.a. "Wu Xie Zhi" and "Dot"), Marc ("Anabel Windsor," a.k.a. "Abigail Wilson" and "Vicky"), and Torsten ("Qoqa Ramazanova," a.k.a. "Zoya Petrovna Sidorova").
Time: Thursday, April 24, 2014 (night).
Place: Sea southeast of Athens.
Last Event: Conclusion of the raid.
With Vinnie at the helm of the group's speedboat, the Agents elude all the blips on the radar and set course for Piraeus. Given the Hellenic Coast Guard's vigorous response, it seems probable that the Company's enemies are going to be raked over hot coals by the Greek authorities – and allied forces, at least behind the scenes – for their stash of chemical weapons and other restricted hardware, not to mention their private prison. With the evening's events in their wake, the team focuses on making a clean exit. Qoqa wipes down and disinfects all of their illegal gear, and then dumps everything overboard in what the charts show to be the area's deepest water. Ultimately, the only items kept are skivvies, personal accessories, and of course the captured data drives.
It's around 08:00 on Friday, April 25 when Vinnie pulls into port. The Agents feel it would be best to exploit the local criminal element at this juncture. Klas did enough research to know which pier to approach, and via what channel, and directs Vinnie to the appropriate docking facilities. After tying up, Vinnie goes ashore and works his Mafia magic. Within the hour, he's back with word that nobody will know about the group's arrival, and that their boat will vanish into thin air.
With the healthy supporting the wounded, the team simply strolls out of the port district. Feigned intoxication disguises the group's injuries, while steely glares from Klas, Lev, and Vinnie keep the jackals at bay. Before long, the Agents are buying an old van with cash. Minutes after that, Vinnie is behind the wheel, ferrying everyone north out of Athens. Everybody is on the lookout for suitable tourist chalets to rent along the coast.
The group has little difficulty finding the ideal location. It's off the highway a short distance, in an area famed for its healthy air and great cooking. Cash changes hands and before long, the Agents have a secluded place where they can rest and recover. The fact that it's a pleasant vacation spot is just a bonus!
Over the next week, the Agents do little but heal and take it easy. Still, nobody can resist checking the news. They learn that the Greek authorities are reporting a "shooting war between rival smuggling rings." There's talk of over 100 people injured or killed in the hostilities, and of military weapons and explosions, but not of such things as surface-to-air missiles and chemical weapons. Reading between the lines, it's evident that global law enforcement is taking an interest – doubtless because of these shocking finds!
By Saturday, May 3, Qoqa has everybody patched up enough that even the group's most wounded members are mobile and can pass as uninjured. The plan is to drive to Sakata's lair in Sweden. That will take a while, but the team has time to kill – and going by car seems wiser than taking a train or a plane when the world is focused on major criminal activity in the region. The Agents put their heads together and decide to drive from Greece through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and finally Poland, and then to travel by ferry to Sweden. Without further ado, they hit the road.
Paul and Vinnie share driving duties. Shortly after each border change, they ditch their vehicle with the local underworld – so it will disappear – and buy a new, legal ride using their freshest IDs. This goes well at each stop. After five such tradeoffs, the team's trail is severely scrambled. Just to make sure there's no bad luck, the Agents drive slowly and conservatively, taking extra time to stay off main roads and avoid run-ins with police.
The evening of Tuesday, May 13, the team rolls up to Sakata's countryside refuge. The Agents are escorted inside by one of the "ninja," and find Sakata happy to see them. When shown the data drives that Jili retrieved, he seems confident that he can crack their security. With that discussion out of the way, he recommends that the group check in with Chaturvedi. Unsurprisingly, Sakata can provide a secure phone for the purpose.
Chaturvedi is relieved to learn that his people are in decent shape, given the nature of their latest target. He explains that he knows via "other channels" – ones he refuses to name even on a secure line – that the team's mission was a success. He also mentions that quite a few European law-enforcement and security services are investigating the aftermath of the raid. It seems that they found the chemical weapons and cells full of detainees. In Chaturvedi's estimation, anybody who wants to establish another such base in the region is going to face almost insurmountable opposition!
Chaturvedi adds that the mission was in fact a "double success." Apparently, the Company decided to position a second reinforced team to monitor the response of Emerson Tactical Solutions to the raid in the Cyclades. Based on the group's intelligence reports on the Everglades facility, these Agents were equipped with heavily reinforced semi tractors patterned on Alfred's monstrosity, so that they could take on a large force of armed men without looking much different from legitimate highway traffic. And sure enough, when things started blowing up in the Mediterranean, a convoy set out in Florida . . . and was promptly plowed into the swamp.
After the exchange of news, conversation shifts to the topic of downtime – both for proper physical and psychological recovery, and simply to lie low. After a little give and take, the Agents have their destination: Taha'a, in French Polynesia. The Company has ties to a resort there, and can easily set up some R&R well out of the sight of the world's spooks and detectives.
