I think that all GMs of fantasy games eventually get tired of the PCs needing to consult the Token Wise NPC to learn what the latest artifact does, anyway. I suppose that one way around that is standardized magic items for sale at Ye Olde Magick Shoppe, but I've always loathed that. Making it a PC's job is much better.
