The Company

On December 7, we had Bonnie ("Xiang Wen," a.k.a. "Wu Xie Zhi"), Marc ("Anabel Windsor," a.k.a. "Abigail Wilson"), Martin ("Zhu Zhang," a.k.a. "Harold Lee"), Mike ("Vincenzo Calliente," of many aliases), and Torsten ("Qoqa Ramazanov," a.k.a. "Zoya Petrovna Sidorov"). Owing to differences between campaign direction and personal expectations, Stéphane ("Hamid Fassal" and "Jean-Baptiste Dieudonné") has opted to step out.

Time: October 4, 2009 (night).
Place: Rundown cottage somewhere north of London.
Last Event: Interrogating prisoners from Russian mob.

After learning the address and general layout of the Russians' London clubhouse – which apparently has an armory in the basement – Anabel, Hamid, Qoqa, Vinnie, Wen, and Zhang unload the gear from the truck that Hamid and Vinnie procured. As they work, they discuss how to hit the mob hangout. The consensus is that it would be best to come up through the basement, if possible. Such an assault would be hard to see coming and also cut off the mobsters from their heavy weapons.

Before getting some rest, the Agents work out everyone's role for this raid:
Anabel: Go in with strike team primarily to eavesdrop before assault, as her hearing and Russian are both exceptional.
Ben: Go in with strike team primarily as their medic.
Hamid: Go in with strike team to provide electronic eavesdropping and deal with security systems.
JB: Provide tactical direction. Take part in assault.
Jili: Remain in truck to guard wounded Russian prisoners.
Klas: Assist at mining into basement. Take part in assault.
Lev: Assist at mining into basement. Lead assault.
Qoqa: Remain in truck with wounded Russian prisoners, as jailer and medic.
Vinnie: Deal with any security systems inside. Take part in assault.
Wen: Supervise mining into basement (she has training at this!). Take part in assault.
Zhang: Assist at mining into basement. Take part in assault.
As for equipment, the plan is to wear body armor and tactical radios, carry captured AK-101 rifles, pack pistols for backup, and keep things light otherwise. The Agents also scrounge together some tools for mining from among the vast array of implements sitting around the barn and tool shed. For good measure, Vinnie and Wen rig two of the captured RPG-7 warheads into makeshift breaching charges, doing this tricky work in front of the prisoners just to keep them nervous. Qoqa double-checks the group's medical gear. And Hamid verifies that his electronics are in working order.

While the others prepare gear, Anabel fills in Terence West. Terence agrees to go along and remain in the truck with Jili and Qoqa, to guard the prisoners. Once the assault is done, he'll enter the building, call his team, and set things up to make it look like an MI5 raid. Anabel then calls Röttwalkyr, who have no problems with their duties. They promise to meet Sharkmeat when called for, and get to work packing their own kit.

After all that, it's time for some rest.

The morning of Monday, October 5, Sharkmeat loads the prisoners onto the truck one at a time. All of the Russians are handcuffed. Those who can speak are gagged with duct tape; the rest are bandaged up enough to be unable to make a sound. Zhang checks each set of handcuffs. For good measure, he zip-cuffs the gangsters to the truck's cargo rails.

Then the Agents load their electronics, medical gear, tools, and weapons into the back of the truck. Vinnie takes the wheel, with Anabel and Terence up front with him; they decide to go unarmed. Hamid, Qoqa, Wen, and Zhang sit in the back, watching over the equipment and the prisoners; they are very well-armed indeed. With everyone ready to roll, Vinnie hits the road.

It's just before noon when Sharkmeat reaches London. Terence directs Vinnie into the general area of the address revealed by the prisoners. Vinnie pulls into an alley, which rather conveniently has a readily accessible sewer entrance. Hamid, Vinnie, Wen, and Zhang shoulder the group's tools and head down through the manhole. Anabel, Qoqa, and Terence stay with the prisoners. Anabel calls Röttwalkyr and gives them directions to the site.

Down in the sewers, Zhang figures out which wall is closest to the basement of the mob clubhouse; apparently, he has some experience with seeing cities from beneath. Then he, Hamid, and Vinnie get to work on the concrete, while Wen directs them and keeps an eye out for dangerous cracks and failures. Vinnie proves to have done this kind of work before . . . something about tunneling into a vault.

Topside, Jili phones to warn Anabel that her team will be late. This might delay things some, as tunneling isn't easy work – even with good tools and a trained crew – and Lev and Klas were supposed to provide some of the labor. Röttwalkyr arrives mid-afternoon, by which time Hamid, Vinnie, and Zhang have removed a section of concrete sewer wall and exposed the cinderblock of the clubhouse basement. Jili takes Anabel's place in the truck, and Anabel leads Ben, JB, Lev, and Klas down to the work site.

Hamid carefully drills a hole in the cinderblock and pokes a miniature camera in. It's completely dark, so there isn't much to see. He has a larger thermal-imaging camera but no fiber optic, so he'll need a bigger hole to take a look around. Vinnie obliges, making quick work of the cinderblock wall. Once there's an opening big enough to admit two arms, Hamid takes another look.

Through his thermal camera, Hamid sees that the basement is one big room filled with racking for cargo. On the shelves are crates upon crates of weapons and ammunition – enough to start a small war. Across these are infrared beams that will detect any attempt to remove the goods. Hamid briefs the others on this. He also mentions that he spotted the staircase, although he couldn't see up it, and warns that if there's a camera here, it's very likely pointed either up or down those stairs.

In light of Hamid's observations, the Agents formulate a plan of action: remove enough cinderblocks that they can enter the basement, carefully step over the IR beams, move toward the staircase without stepping directly across its end, stack up on either side of the stairs, and then surge up and out to assault the clubhouse above. Then Vinnie gets to work on the last few blocks while the others prepare their gear. When the opening is big enough to admit a gun-toting agent, Hamid fires up his thermal camera again. He takes careful stock of obstacles and IR beams so that he can direct the others.

Zhang goes through first, without difficulty. Then Anabel steps through with the team's directional microphone. The others hang back while Anabel listens. She tells the others that she hears shouting. The group decides to wait and see what happens. After about 25 minutes, Anabel hears shots and the sound of a body falling.

This sounds like a useful distraction, so the Agents decide to move in. Vinnie joins Anabel and Zhang. Wen goes next . . . and accidentally trips a beam! Hamid warns his allies of this. JB tells them that it's time to move, as the assault might still work if it hits before the people upstairs have time to notice and respond to the alert. With that, Klas, Lev, and Wen turn on tactical lights, and everybody rushes the stairs.

The Agents advance in single file: Vinnie on point, followed by Zhang, Wen, Lev, Klas, JB, Anabel, Hamid, and finally Ben. Vinnie and Zhang have shotguns, and Vinnie's is loaded with breaching rounds provided by Terence; however, Zhang is holding onto an AK for Vinnie. Wen, Lev, Klas, and JB have AKs out already. The other three have pistols ready, mostly for self-defense.

Vinnie leads the group up the stairs. On reaching the door at the top, he fires a couple of breaching rounds at the lock and frame, and kicks the door open. As soon as it gives way, he drops his shotgun and snatches his AK from Zhang's extended hand. Then all nine Agents boil into the room beyond.

Vinnie and Zhang cross the room at a run, charging and shooting the one obviously alerted guard in sight. Wen, Lev, and Klas fan out just behind them, firing full-auto. It takes mere seconds to neutralize the gangsters. Most of them seem to be unarmored, and armed with nothing heavier than pistols. A couple of guards near the entrances have AKs of their own, but are taken by surprise and don't get a shot off. When the smoke clears, five foes are down with wounds and six are beyond saving.

The Agents move in and sweep for threats, but the area seems secure with one exception: Zhang and Vinnie saw a door slam shut just as the assault began. Based on what Qoqa learned from the prisoners, this would be the entrance to the office. General consensus is that the boss – Yuri – is barricaded in there, possibly with one or more bodyguards. Everybody reloads, and then Wen takes aim at the door.

To be continued . . .
