That point about the display is just the one I was going to make: Can you salvage the monitor from the old system? I've had external monitors on my system; its heart is a first generation G4 box, so when the initial monitor fried I just bought a Samsung flatscreen and plugged it in. I shouldn't think the monitor would have been much impacted by whatever went wrong with the rest of your system. Might save you a few hundred, especially for a big screen.
