The Company
For our January 11 session, we had Bonnie ("Xiang Wen," a.k.a. "Wu Xie Zhi"), Marc ("Anabel Windsor," a.k.a. "Abigail Wilson"), and Torsten ("Qoqa Ramazanov," a.k.a. "Zoya Petrovna Sidorov"). Martin ("Zhu Zhang," a.k.a. "Harold Lee") was still in 名古屋市, while Mike ("Vincenzo Calliente," of many aliases) had a cold that he thoughtfully decided not to share with us. Since the only three PCs in the "scummy dive" scene were Anabel, Qoqa, and Wen, this worked. However, it was a brief scene, so this is a short recap!
Time: October 15, 2009 (night).
Place: Scummy dive, Piraeus.
Last Event: Showing the bartender the matchbook handed off by the FSB.
When the bartender steps away after seeing the matchbook, Anabel, Jili, Qoqa, and Wen go on high alert, keeping an eye on the room. They see no reaction from the patrons, but Qoqa keeps her hand on the knife in her purse . . . just in case. After a tense 10 minutes, the bartender returns, looking nervous. At the same time, Wen sees two big men moving through the tavern toward the bar. She decides to make no effort to hide the fact that she spotted them.
Realizing they've been made, the two men make directly for the Agents. At the bar, they ask which woman spoke Russian to their friend. Anabel volunteers, and the men start asking a lot of questions, starting with "Why are you here?" Qoqa recognizes the type – the Russian gangster type – and silently pokes Anabel as a warning. Still playing "dumb tourist," Anabel explains that she and her friends came here because they were told they could buy some ganja, and she wanted a Russian place because she studied Russian in school but not Greek.
The big guys look at each other and seem to buy the story. They direct Anabel to a man sitting at a nearby table. Anabel goes over there and ends up buying a rather large bag of low-quality weed, obviously dusted. Anabel plays dumb, falls for the "How much you got?" ploy, hands over a lot of money, and thanks the dealer. Then she signals for the others to leave.
Outside, it quickly becomes apparent that the men inside only played along to avoid making a scene in front of too many witnesses. Up the street, cutting off the route to the busier parts of Piraeus, are four menacing thugs with blunt instruments. In the other direction, toward even worse areas, are four more ruffians. Both groups are walking swiftly toward the women with malicious intent in their eyes.
Wen hisses that the best way out is to run at the townward group, plow through their line, and flee for safety. She signals the others to follow her lead, and then charges the thug on the far left of the group up the street. The bruiser attempts to hit Wen in the leg with a crowbar, while his nearest buddy swings a hammer at her head. Wen evades both blows, gets airborne, and kicks the man with the crowbar in the crotch. He fails to sidestep; Wen can feel something squish as her victim collapses to the pavement.
As soon as Wen's target falls, her allies rush through the opening she created. Anabel is now in the lead; Wen brings up the rear. Behind them are shouts in Russian – not Greek. Fortunately, the eight pursuers don't seem to have guns. They also aren't in as good shape as the women, and rapidly fall behind. All four Agents start looking for hiding places up ahead, where they can call for backup and stay put until it arrives.
Unfortunately, their opponents have other plans. Anabel hears a motorcycle approaching from ahead. As it crests the hill, she can see that it bears two riders: a driver and a gunman. It seems that while live capture was the gangsters' Plan A, Plan B is to kill the witnesses.
The Agents scatter to the sides of the street. Wen tosses an old crate in the motorbike's path, but the driver swerves around it. This causes the gunman to miss his shot, and takes the vehicle toward Qoqa. Qoqa calmly sidesteps and slashes at the driver with her knife. She keeps her blade very sharp; it doesn't get torn from her grasp, but simply cuts, long and deep. Being a medic, she's fairly certain that she sliced lung.
Abruptly, the injured motorcycle driver loses control of his vehicle, which smashes into a nearby wall. He looks horribly wounded, possibly dead. The gunman is hurled into the building with a resounding "crunch." Neither is moving.
The women run for the motorcycle. Anabel picks up the bike with Qoqa's help, verifies that it will still run, and tells Jili to hop on behind her. Qoqa shouts for them to leave and get help – or at least a better vehicle. The unspoken truth is that Anabel and Jili aren't combatants, while Qoqa survived the Second Chechen War and Wen is a trained killer. Anabel needs no reminder; showing remarkable skill with a motorbike, she leaves at high speed.
Meanwhile, Wen scoops up the pistol – an old Makarov – and quickly checks it. It's still good. She fires once at the fastest of the eight men lumbering up the street toward her and Qoqa. Her shot is brutally true; she sees blood from the exit wound shower her victim's slower associates. Qoqa uses the opportunity to utter a very loud threat in Russian. Wen has no idea what Qoqa said, but the thugs take one look at the smoking gun and start running away.
With a moment's peace bought, Qoqa and Wen hastily rifle through the pockets of the two men who were on the motorcycle. They find two cell phones, a wallet, and a spare magazine for the pistol. They gather these things and head for the shadows. Once out of sight, Wen calls Jili, who always has her phone headset on. Jili says that she can track Wen by phone, and that she and Anabel will come back for them once they have a car.
Anabel soon spots an easy mark for some hasty auto theft. She pulls over, but leaves the bike still idling just in case. Jili is never without a small tool kit, which enables the two of them to break into the car and start it up. They're soon on the way back to Qoqa and Wen, and manage to pick them up before any more thugs appear.
However, the situation isn't over yet. When the Agents turn the corner to leave the area, they hear squealing tires behind them as a big, black car pulls out of a nearby alleyway. Wen leans out the window and starts shooting. When the magazine is empty, she reloads and shoots some more. She manages the ruin the windshield of the pursuing vehicle, which abruptly pulls off to one side and stops following.
After that, the only challenge is driving back to the hotel in Piraeus' wonderful traffic. They eventually get there, well after midnight on October 16. Hamid and Jili go right to work on the captured cell phones, while Zhang turns a professional eye to the ID in the wallet.
