Good use of a day!
2 Sep 2008 01:13This was the first Labo(u)r Day I've taken as a holiday since 1994. I did nothing of note other than play Civilization IV, poke around in the back yard pestering my mum with pictures of plants sent via my iPhone, perfect my mai tai recipe, sit in the sun with said mai tais, and have roasted marrow bones with parsley salad and toast* . . . Is that sufficiently slack?

* Beg the butcher to sell you sawed-up rounds of beef leg bone, which never seems to be sold out in the open. Soak these in cold water for a day to leach out the overwhelming blood taste. Roast them until somewhat runny. To eat, poke out the gooey marrow and spread it on thin, crispy toast made from good bread (we used rosemary bread tonight). Sprinkle with a little fleur de sel. Garnish with a bit of salad made with parsley, capers, and lemon juice. Mmm. This is totally bad for you, in every way, and precisely what I'm not supposed to be eating, given my blood pressure. That's why I eat it perhaps once a year.
