Cats are, for the most part, cute. Take my little cat, Zephyra. As of our last weigh-in, she had approximately 1/28 my mass. She is tiny – that's the first thing most people notice about her. Actually, it's the second thing. The first thing they notice is her cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). This is important for the next part of the story.

Last week, while Bonnie was at her baladi class, I finished up work and headed down to my elliptical trainer to put in some cardio time. Zephyra decided to run ahead of me, which for a CH cat is closer to the zig-zag dash they teach soldiers to use when there's a sniper around. So I had to avoid stepping on her . . . and then she lurched under my foot during my sidestep, which resulted in me putting that foot way out ahead.

As a result, I pitched forward. Of course, there was a small, fragile cat in the way, so I deliberately rolled away from her instead of falling sensibly. And as I was headed off to exercise, I had a water bottle in hand, which naturally messed up the landing.

Bam. Right on the upper right arm. The results are in the image to the right. That was caused by a 6-lb. cat. I suspect that I could convince somebody gullible that a full-sized tiger did it by smacking me with its claws retracted. It's further proof that you can't take the tiger out of the mog, anyway.

PS: The Left 4 Dead 2 demo is out! I played it some last night, and will play it more again tonight. All told, I'm happy with it. This has nothing to do with tigers and everything to do with zombies, but two trivial posts in one day would be excessive.

For those who interact with me primarily via the net: I've had quite the nasty cold since this past weekend. It has become annoying enough that I've gone from "getting very little work done and feeling slightly crappy" to "getting no work done and taking a day off to get better." This means that I'm running behind on . . . well, pretty much everything that I've promised to do, from SJ Games work to my final campaign recap to simply answering my e-mail. Sorry about that!

On the bright side, it has been nice and warm here in Montréal this week. I took the screenshot to the right on Monday, mostly to give me something with which to pester my coworkers in Texas. Hey, when you're feeling crummy, you take pleasure in the small things.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure that this is a cold and not the dreaded swine flu. I can't believe how many people won't believe me when I say that, though. Have we become that alarmist and obsessed with disaster? Geez. I can't promise that it isn't the zombie plague, though. I do feel rather undead . . .

I went to the follow-up appointment for my dental surgery today. The dentist said that everything looked good, which means that I'm over that bloody little episode. With luck, all that surgery – four cuts and four pastes, in a total of two procedures – will give me decent results for life. Needless to say, after thousands of bucks, many days of missed work, and quite a bit of bleeding and inconvenience, that's good news.

In fact, the dentist said that everything looked unusually good, and that it had all healed up unexpectedly well. There may yet be hope for me in the super-powers department. Perhaps I have some kind of mutant healing factor. (Gaming geek digression: "It's cheaper with the 'Gums only' limitation, right?") Still, I was a little freaked when the dentist said, "We should do a bunch more grafts!" Dentist humor . . .

The good news comes at an opportune moment: B. and T. are in town this weekend, and we're going to get dim sum in the morning. It has been years since I last had dim sum. Needless to say, it's hard to chew through phoenix talons with your mouth in a mess.

Not really. But damnit, after nine days of smooth recovery, one of the surgical sites in my mouth opened up and wouldn't stop bleeding. I had to go get it stabilized. I missed a night's sleep, and now I'm back to eating mush . . . and to add insult to injury, I'm feverish and dehydrated.

The moral of this outbreak? If you deal with me personally or professionally, and you run into radio silence, it's because I'm feeling quite ill. I'm sure the blood will be replaced soon. In the interim, I'm going hermit on the world.

Those who follow my life and times (hah!) might remember that I had dental surgery on the right-hand side of my mouth late last year. I just got back from having the same bloody (literally) procedure done on the left-hand side. Whee! Since everything I wrote about it the last time is true this time, too, I'm going to cheat and simply link it. Apologies in advance to those who must deal with me over the next week or two . . . I'll be a grump.

PS: The fact that a song from Bites is playing (see "current song," above) is a coincidence. I think.

So today I hit another milestone in the epic that is my recent dental surgery: One of the massive dressings fell off. Now to be honest, I'm hating those, and the sooner the rest leave my mouth, the sooner I'll be able to talk and swallow properly. But . . . four days is a little on the early side, so I had to drop everything and run to my dentist. Who basically told me, "Yeah, that's early, but whatever. It happens. You're fine." Oh, well. I needed the two 30-minute walks in icy winter air anyway.

Achtung! This is a TMI post.

Gory tales of the completely natural and expensive . . . )

I'm back from getting my flu shot. Remember, kids: Flu is no fun . . . and even if you don't care, it's uncool to spread it around, especially to family, friends, and coworkers who suffer from respiratory conditions. Constant, close-range, intensive exposure to the virus erases the good done by others' vaccinations. For instance, Bonnie has asthma, and even if she got the shot, I would be able to infect her if I sat around home with the flu – and then she'd get to spend time on a ventilator in the hospital. So do the right thing and take a moment out to get stabbed. It's worth it (and in most places, it's also free and your boss has to give you time off to go do it).
